July/August 2007 NewsletterGreetings from TinyTotsAway.com!In this issue: Real nappies as bad for environment as disposables |
What's in the News?Real nappies as bad for environment as disposablesThe Government have dropped the Real Nappy Campaign after a four year study showed they have as much negative impact on the environment as disposables. The decision comes after a three-year campaign urging parents to use washable towelling nappies which has cost taxpayers at least £30million. Speaking in the Commons last week, former waste minister Ben Bradshaw confirmed the Campaign over saying, "Reusable nappies may reduce demands on landfill but they still impact on the environment in other ways, such as the water and energy used in washing and drying them." As a result of the findings, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs consequently dropped the Campaign, concluding that "there was no significant difference between any of the environmental impacts of the disposable, home use reusable and commercial laundry systems that were assessed". The admission has prompted accusations from pressure groups that huge sums of money are being wasted under the pretence of saving the environment. It is estimated that at least three billion disposable nappies are thrown away every year in the UK, creating a waste mountain which is costing local authorities more than £40million a year to treat. Baby born with teethTeething troubles started early for a Worthing mum when midwives made a dental discovery on her newborn baby. Beautiful Megan was born at 7.23pm on June 29, a healthy baby girl. But doctors soon discovered she came with extras - at least seven teeth. Mum Claire who was born with 12 teeth - said she was "a little bit shocked" by the news. "At three days old, she'd already had two dentist appointments." Claire has suffered from dental problems for most of her life since the teeth she was born with were removed when she was three months old. Many have never grown back and she is hopeful her daughter will not suffer the same fate. "I'm hopeful she won't go through what I had to," said Claire. "I hope she should be all right." Megan's front four teeth have been removed because they were loose and at risk of being inhaled, but the remaining teeth are solid and pose no risk. Claire believed the odds of a baby being born with one or two teeth were around one in 2,000, but she had found no record of it happening elsewhere. Dentist Martin Bean, a partner at the Grand Avenue dental practice, said: "It's unusual but not unknown. "But it's difficult to say how often it happens." |
